![]() ![]() These terms are used differently by anglers chasing different species of fish. If you do a Google search for images of "flutter spoon", "jigging spoon", "casting spoon" & "trolling spoon", interestingly enough, you will see some of the same spoons. The difference is only in the marketing & application. Other than the term "trolling" applied to them, some are almost identical in shape & design to so called "flutter" spoons for bass on the market. ![]() Take for example some of the "trolling" spoons used by trout & salmon anglers. They are somewhat cupped, but so are other types of spoons. They are generally, lighter weight than both casting & jigging spoons, and usually narrow in shape, but not necessarily. Yes, true jigging spoons are generally heavy & used on or near the bottom, but that's not to say you can't use another type of spoon for that technique. The fact is, there are many spoons that can be used for all the techniques you're asked about. I'm not sure what you mean by "leaf" shape? Sgsmooth, as Jesse has said, you have the general idea. The jigging spoon is the heavier more patterned/embossed one right? I take it this type if fished closer to the bottom with more of a "jig" or shaking style presentation? I guess if the fish are holding more to cover or the bottom then this is worth a shot as a jig or plastic alternative? The flutter spoons have sort of the leaf shape right? and essentially "flutter" to the bottom wildly and are ripped up and down to imitate a dying fish falling out of a school? I imagine this might be the better style and technique for actively feeding suspended fish. So trolling spoons aside (sorta self explanatory) what's the main difference between a flutter spoon and a jigging spoon in design? in presentation? and when would you want one vs. I need to get some experience here as I was frequently stuck on some deep suspended fish this past fall that I couldn't quite get to strike with crankbaits or heavy jigs or plastics. Dug around a little bit on the site and didn't see a tremendous amount of forum threads or articles dedicated to this, and other web resources have left me kinda confused too.
